Dubai Expo 2020 Glitz to be Showcased in October 2021
The COVID-19 has significantly impacted many sectors and industries across the world. Moreover, the virus has extended dates of several sports events including the Tokyo Olympics and many exciting exhibitions too. As the health of the entire human race stands at great risk, the organisers of the Dubai Expo 2020 have suggested delaying the opening of the event that is known to celebrate innovation, collaboration and unique ideas for a period of six months in the UAE.
Organised after every five years, the Expo 2020 presents a great opportunity for the UAE to curate a platform for achievements in art, science and technology. The decision of postponement is a clear reflection of the self-acknowledgement of Dubai’s responsibility towards the global citizenship.
The Expo 2020 Dubai Steering Committee and Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), which is the governing body of the World Expo, together collaborated with the representatives from Expo 2020 International Participants for considering the possibility of a one-year delay. Speaking about the issue, the Commissioner General of Egypt: Dr Ahmed Maghawry Diab said, “Egypt appreciates the efforts undertaken by the UAE Government and the BIE to convene Expo 2020 Dubai. We also commend their efforts to accommodate the various needs and requests of all participants. Egypt is committed to a successful event as much as it is committed to all actions taken or to be agreed upon to ensure the safety of all international and domestic visitors.”
For the final dates of the event, the BIE will join hands with its member states. The ultimate decision lies in the hands of the General Assembly of BIE, as the rules necessitate a two-thirds majority vote from the member states.
Keeping in mind the theme of Expo 2020 — “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”, the authorities have promised that the event will offer a unique experience for visitors.
The news of postponement was announced by the organisation on Twitter too. It stated, “In solidarity with participating countries, following discussions with the BIE and the Expo 2020 Steering Committee, the Government of the UAE has notified the BIE of its request to change the dates of Expo 2020 Dubai to 1 October 2021–31 March 2022.”
This year, the event was expecting more than 20 million people to witness live the projects of over 190 countries till April 10, 2021. Sources claim that tickets bought prior to March 30, 2020 will retain their value and could be reissued for the new Expo 2020 dates. Those who won’t be able to attend on the new dates shall be able to get a refund.
