Mounting Covid-19 infections in Spain have left hoteliers sceptical about future. Since most people are preferring domestic vacations, rural operators are in a comparatively better situation. But earnings are limited for the UK hotels as occupancy rates still stand at an average of 25 percent. Consequently, many UK hotels, including Spain’s Majorka hotels, are planning to shut down for the remaining summer season.

The first hotel to announce this officially is the four-star Fergus Style Soller Beach in Majorca’s Puerto de Sóller. The hotel announced on Facebook, “We are coming to you with not such great news, dear friends: due the last Covid measures taken by UK Government, we have no other choice than close the hotel for this season. We are devastated and we know that many of you will be too. We hope you all keep safe, positive and looking forward to come as soon as things get better, if not this year, the next one”.

The reduction in hotel occupancy rates is mainly because of strict UK quarantine rules. Reports from the Spanish Tourism Institute — Turespaña state that reservations for Spain have plunged by 80 percent since the UK government re-imposed strict quarantine rules.

Apart from Spain’s Majorka hotels, other popular hotels like Ibiza Rocks and Craig David are also witnessing a fall. Usually these hotels host huge pool parties and other social events in the summer season, but this isn’t a usual year!

Since most travellers entering the UK are required to self-isolate for 14 days, cancellations have now become a regular story for hotels.

At a time when most hoteliers are rethinking their reopening plans, Accor hotels is offering hotel rooms for daytime ‘hotel offices’. You can convert your hotel rooms into your workspace by booking rooms at special daytime rates on the Accor website. The best part is that you don’t have to pay overnight charges!

Despite best efforts to lure tourists, big hotel chains like Spain’s Majorka hotels have been forced to shut doors for the season. Most hoteliers think that this is because travel routes are open for Turkey and Greece.

If the UK government does not think about modifying quarantine rules to ease pains of the hospitality sector, many popular hotels will have a tough time dealing with the summer season losses.
